Liposuction
What is Liposuction?
It is a technique to remove unwanted fat deposits in all areas of the body.
Patients who are fit and of normal-weight with firm elastic skin, who require a reduction of isolated fat pockets are best selected for this procedure. Liposuction is a procedure that focuses on a specific area which you would like to sculpt or slim down. These include the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck as well as medical conditions such as a benign fat tumour (lipoma) or male breasts (gynaecomastia).
Modern liposuction involves several new techniques and machines that help sculpt fat. At Lutétia Clinic our board certified plastic surgeons use body-jet® evo and Vaserlipo liposuction machines to give more precise results and quicker recovery times. Although no type of liposuction is a substitute for dieting and exercise, liposuction can remove stubborn areas of fat that don’t respond to traditional weight-loss methods.
Liposuction is often combined with other body contouring surgical procedures and is one of the safest and most popular cosmetic procedures.
What happens during the procedure?
The procedure involves removing unwanted fat by sucking it out through a medical tube called a cannula. This is introduced to the area through small hidden incisions . It is not a substitute for natural weight loss but rather a complementary procedure aiding in stubborn areas that do not conform to diet and exercise.
Small incisions in the skin are made and the cannula is inserted, this is used to loosen the fat and break it up, next a special suction device is attached to the cannula and the fat is removed through this.
Your plastic surgeon will discuss the different surgical approaches and select the best option suited for your case.
At the end of the liposuction procedure, a specialized garment will be used to add compression to the surgical area which will help reduce swelling. There is always a degree of swelling and bruising after the procedure.
What happens at the consultation?
Remember to write down all your possible concerns and questions and have them ready for when you meet with your plastic surgeon. You will be discussing your surgical options, the pros and cons of each, as well as your medical history. The surgeon will need to know all your current medications you are taking and any serious illness you may have had in the past and as to whether you smoke.
You will have a medical examination, including medical photography that will be placed in your confidential medical file (you will sign a consent form for taking, storing and using the photographs). Your height and weight will be measured to ensure you are physically fit for the operation. It is important to note that if you are planning to fall pregnant your surgeon might delay the procedure.
Recovery and how long will my results last?
Your recovery time, post-operative instructions and how long before you can resume your normal physical activity and work will be individualized depending on your procedure and discussed prior to your surgery. You will receive a medical support garment that will be required to be worn.
It is important to note that your surgeon will share detailed instructions of how to take care of your surgical areas and any warning symptoms to look out for. The amount of time it takes for recovery varies greatly among patients and this will be discussed based on your particular case.
Liposuction results are technically permanent as the fat cells are removed. It is important to note that weight gain, natural aging, pregnancy and lifestyle factors can influence your results over time. Therefore, it is important to ensure a healthy lifestyle and a stable weight is maintained for best results. Routine follow-ups after surgery should not be missed.
The final results of liposuction will be apparent at approximately 4-6 months after the procedure.
Bespoke treatment plans.
Your surgeon will discuss your goals, lifestyle, including physical activity, and based on this a bespoke treatment plan will be shared with you.
These will include the surgery approach, the outcome and risks and where the surgery will take place. Expectations will be discussed, and a post-surgery recovery plan will be shared.
Scars and incisions what will they look like?
Liposuction scars are small. As most scars, if looked after well post-surgery, they will mature and fade over 18 months, your surgeon will make every effort to hide and minimize scars, the goal of the surgery is to achieve the best result with the least visible scar.
