What is a breast reduction surgery?
For some individuals, breast size can negatively impact their activities of daily life as well as body confidence. Factors that determine the size of women’s breasts include a genetic predisposition, body weight and hormonal influences. The aim of a breast reduction surgery is to reduce the size and reshape the breasts so that they are more proportioned to the rest of your body and no longer cause functional or aesthetic concern.
This commonly requested procedure is conducted by our board certified plastic surgeons at Maison Lutétia in Dubai. The procedure helps woman regain confidence, improving lifestyle, appearance and relieving of physical and emotional stress caused by large breasts.
What happens during a breast reduction surgery?
The plastic surgeon will remove fat, breast tissue and skin in order to achieve a smaller well-defined breast with a youthful shape. The nipples are lifted to a more youthful position and the breasts are reshaped to form smaller breasts.
When to consider the surgery?
If you suffer from back, shoulder or neck pain, bra strap grooving, skin irritation due to large breasts, or breast pain this surgery is an option to alleviate symptoms. The surgery will improve the shape of your breasts.
What you need to consider.
After the surgery your breasts will be better proportioned. The surgery will alleviate neck, back and shoulder pain, in return this will allow for a more physical active lifestyle previously hindered by pain or the size of your beasts. It is important to note that the surgery can cause a decrease in sensation in some areas, including nipples, areolas and within the scars. Some women might face problems with breastfeeding after the surgery.
During your consultation you and your plastic surgeon will discuss these considerations and discuss the best option that suits your requirements and lifestyle. The size and shape of your breasts and how much reduction you desire are factors that will help your plastic surgeon determine the best technique for you.
What happens at the consultation?
Remember to write down all your possible concerns and questions and have them ready for when you meet with your plastic surgeon. You will be discussing your surgical options, the pros and cons of each, as well as your medical history. The surgeon will need to know all your current medications you are taking and any serious illness you may have had in the past and as to whether you smoke.
You will have a breast examination, including medical photography that will be placed in your confidential medical file (you will sign a consent form for taking, storing and using the photographs). Your height and weight will be measured to ensure you are physically fit for the operation. It is important to note that if you are planning to fall pregnant your surgeon might delay the procedure.
Bespoke treatment plans.
Your surgeon will discuss your goals, lifestyle, including physical activity, and based on this a bespoke treatment plan will be shared with you.
These will include the surgery approach, the outcome and risks and where the surgery will take place. Expectations will be discussed, and a post-surgery recovery plan will be shared.
All you need to know about the procedure.
All you need to know about the procedure.
The procedure is a day case operation and commonly involves anchor shaped scars where the surgeon will remove the excess fat, breast tissue and skin. The nipple and areola are lifted up to their new higher position. If the areolas were enlarged or stretched they will be reduced and excess skin that was located above the nipple is brought down and together to reshape the breast. Liposuction may be used to improve the contour under the arm.
Scars and incisions what will they look like?
Scars vary according to type of incision you and your plastic surgeon agree on, our plastic surgeons at Lutetia will conceal some incision lines in your natural breast contours as much a possible. As most scars, if looked after well post-surgery, they mature over 18 months, your surgeon will make every effort to hide and minimize scars, the goal of the surgery is to achieve the best result with the least visible scar.
Recovery and how long will my results last?
Your recovery time, post-operative instructions and how long before you can resume your normal physical activity and work will be individualized depending on your procedure and discussed prior to your surgery. You will receive a medical support bra that will be required to be worn.
It is important to note that your surgeon will share detailed instructions of how to take care of your surgical area and any warning symptoms to look out for. The amount of time it takes for recovery varies greatly among patients and this will be discussed based on your particular case.
Breast reduction surgery is long lasting, unless you gain or lose a significant amount of weight or become pregnant, your breasts will remain a consistent size. Aging and gravity can still affect your breast over time. Routine follow-ups after surgery should not be missed.
