What is breast augmentation surgery?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that increases or restores breast size using silicone gel implants or in some cases, fat transfer – this is called lipofilling or fat grafting. In this procedure, fat is obtained from another part of the body via liposuction, processed and then prepared for injection back into the breast tissue. On occasion, these approaches are combined in a hybrid breast augmentation.

In the case of implant insertion, the implant can be placed under breast tissue or behind the chest muscle.

It is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures conducted by our board certified plastic surgeons at Maison Lutetia in Dubai. The procedure helps woman regain confidence after breast feeding, weight loss, after mastectomy and acts to enhance or create balance to their figures.

When to consider breast augmentation.

We face changes in our body and breast tissue over time, either through weight loss, pregnancy, aging (breast volume is lost and causes drooping, known as ptosis) or surgery. Breast symmetry can be another issue that can be a lifelong challenge for some women.

For many women the results of these factors leave them with a lack of body confidence.

Breast augmentation can improve the shape, size and symmetry of your breast helping it to be better proportioned and create a more appealing figure. It is a surgery that restores balance.

What you need to consider.

This surgery is a long-term solution for breast enhancement, restoring a youthful looking figure and balance female silhouette. However, it is important to note that the implants are not life time devices and may eventually require replacement at some point. As with other surgeries, there are surgical risks to consider and require discussions with your plastic surgeon.

During your consultation you and your plastic surgeon will discuss these considerations and discuss the best option that suits your requirements and lifestyle.

What happens at the consultation?

Remember to write down all your possible concerns and questions and have them ready for when you meet with your plastic surgeon. You will be discussing your surgical options, the pro’s and cons of each, as well as your medical history. The surgeon will need to know all your current medications you are taking and any serious illness you may have had in the past and as to whether you smoke.

You will have a breast examination, including medical photography that will be placed in your confidential medical file (you will sign a consent form for taking, storing and using the photographs). Your height and weight will be measured to ensure you are physically fit for the operation. It is important to note that if you are planning to fall pregnant your surgeon might delay the procedure.

Your potential implant size will be determined by implant sizing devices and 3-D imaging.

All you need to know about the procedure.

How is a breast augmentation performed?

If your surgeon will be using implants, an incision is made to create a pocket in the chest / breast area, the implant is placed in this pocket.

Implants are placed either behind the breast or behind the muscle the breast sits on, depending on your anatomy and the surgeon’s recommendations.

An additional option for breast augmentation is fat transfer, this is when the surgeon removes some of your own fat, using liposuction, (from either your abdomen, thighs or flanks), the fat is then transferred into your breast.

Information about the implants.

As the name suggests (silicone implants) the outer layer of breast implants is made of silicone or, in some cases, polyurethane and the inside is composed of cohesive silicone gel.

Implants are either shaped round or in a teardrop shape (anatomical), round implants are fuller at the top of the breast while teardrop you can select your width and height separately. Each patient will have a different size depending on the natural dimensions of your existing breast tissue.

Medical silicone is used safely in many medical devices including breast implants. In all cases, your body will form a layer called a capsule around the implant. In rare cases, the capsule can thicken and tighten around the implant and this is called capsular contracture, which can change the shape and feeling of the breast.

Implant Size.

The size is measured in millimeters (ml) in cubic centimeters (cm3) or by weight (grams). During your consultation the surgeon will discuss the best options (size and shape) that will compliment your shape and suite your lifestyle. This is the most critical part of the process.

What is a breast uplift?

If your concern is mild droopiness (or ptsosis), breast augmentation surgery can offer you improvement through a additional procedure called a  breast uplift or mastopexy. When performed with a augmentation this is referred to as a breast augmentation mastopexy (BAM).  If the size of the breast is not a concern but only the droopiness the surgery is performed without an implant, the mastopexy can be performed on its own.

Breast augmentation incisions and scars.

During the procedure an incision is typically in the fold underneath the breast. If a lift is performed, then scars are present around the areolar, vertically down the breast and in the breast fold.

Bespoke treatment plans.

Your surgeon will discuss your goals, lifestyle, including physical activity, and based on this a bespoke treatment plan will be shared with you.

These will include the surgery approach, such as a combination treatment or type of implant, the outcomes and risks and where the surgery will take place. Expectations will be discussed, and a post-surgery recovery plan will be shared.

Recovery and how long will my results last?

Your recovery time, post-operative instructions and how long before your can resume your normal physical activity and work will be individualized depending on your procedure and discussed prior to your surgery.  You will receive a medical support bra that will be required to be worn.

It is important to note that your surgeon will share detailed instructions of how to take care of your surgical area and any warning symptoms to look out for. The amount of time it takes for recovery varies greatly among patients and this will be discussed based on your particular case.

Breast augmentation results are long-lasting, however keep in mind that age related changes do occur with breast tissue and also breast size and shape is affected by weight gain, pregnancy, breast feeding, sports and gravity. Routine follow-ups and normal breast care should not be missed.
