Understanding Hair Loss

The Hair Cycle
To understand hair loss, you must first understand the hair cycle that each hair goes through. Each strand of hair on the human body, from your scalp to your legs, is at its own stage of development. From the moment a hair starts to grow until it falls out, it passes through three stages. And once the cycle for each hair is complete, it restarts again and a new hair is formed. For some people this cycle takes three years, for others, it takes six years. This again depends on your genes.
This is your hair’s growth phase and the longer it stays in this phase, the longer it grows. About 85 – 95 percent of the hair on your head is at this stage in the cycle at any given time.
Over a few weeks, hair growth slows and the hair follicle shrinks.
Over months, hair growth stops and the old hair detaches from the hair follicle. A new hair begins the growth phase, pushing the old hair out.

Causes of Hair Loss
For men, hair loss is usually caused by the effects of androgen hormones on follicles that are genetically predisposed to react to them by shrinking and shedding hair. Looking at typical male-pattern baldness, you can see that follicles at the hairline and crown of the head are sensitive to these androgens and hair at the back isn’t. This is why men’s hairlines recede while the hair in back remains dense. This is also why hair can be restored to the front or crown, from the back.
Hair loss in women is more complicated and causes include medical conditions, medication, physical or emotional stress, hormonal imbalances, iron deficiency and even wearing hair pulled too tight into a ponytail or bun. Tight weaves, top knots, and buns can gradually damage the roots and small vessels of the hair. As a result, the hair first shrinks and then falls out quickly. This form of alopecia, or hair loss, mainly appears around the face.
How to Combat Hair Loss
For some, hair loss can cause mild disappointment, for others significant psychological distress and in rare cases is associated with low self-esteem and depression. This explains the huge market of “miracle” products and treatments that too often turn out to be a sham.At Lutétia Clinic, there are effective treatments that can improve the health of your scalp and follicles, for instance, PRP, LED therapy, and Mesotherapy. Scalp micro pigmentation can create the illusion of thicker hair and cover up scalp imperfections. Hair transplant, of course, is the most effective and most permanent way to combat hair loss. A short information meeting with one of our hair specialists can answer any of your questions and provide the best options for your hair loss situation.
