Acne & Oily Skin

Looking for a solution to this common problem?

Acne and oily skin are common skin complaints. We often associate this disruptive skin problem with teenagers, but it’s an issue that can affect men and women at any age and for many different reasons.

What causes oily skin and acne?

Hormones and genetics play a big role in who gets acne. But not only that, your diet and your skincare regime also play a role.

Keep in mind that the oil, or sebum, your skin produces isn’t all bad. It protects your skin, acts as a natural moisturizer, and it gives your hair its shine. Too much oil, however, leads to clogged pores and acne, especially when the oil traps dead skin cells and bacteria in your pores.

Do you suffer from the following?

  • Whiteheads (little shallow bumps caused by a buildup of sebum and dead skin cells)
  • Blackheads (Like whiteheads but the pores are open and the oil had oxidized)
  • Papules (small raised bumps)
  • Pustules (pimples)
  • Cysts (deeper, bigger, painful, and slower to heal)
  • Nodules (a hard bump deep within the skin. The most severe form of acne)

How can we treat acne and oily skin?

Keeping your face clean will help. This includes washing your face every day but also washing your pillowcase every few days. Spot treatments that include benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are good choices to treat mild acne and oily skin. Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria that can cause acne. Salicylic acid removes dead skin cells that can clog pores.

Still, if acne is severe or disrupting your social life, it’s time to see a specialist.

Our skin experts have some solutions for oil over-production, clogged pores, acne, and even acne scars. Some treatments attack the bacteria and others clear the pores and inhibit oil production. A consultation is the best next step to find out more.
