Below are some traditional techniques

The FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) Technique

Known as one of the oldest hair Transplantation techniques in the industry, FUT or Follicular Unit Transplant technique, is a surgical method whereby a rectangular, thin strip of scalp is removed from the back of the head. This strip is then examined under a microscope to extract potential hair follicles. The extraction phase is quicker however, it can cause a significant scar which can be a hassle to cover. Although, this technique is one of the more primitive techniques, it’s still practiced by most clinics and hair transplantation centres.

The FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) Technique

In the Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE technique, an extraction tool is used to make a small circular cut in the donor zone. This technique can be performed by a doctor, technician or an automated tool called Automated Follicular Implant or IFA®. This includes Safer, Neograft and Artas.

FUE is performed multiple times until enough follicles have been collected for implantation.

Traditional hair implantation techniques like FUE and FUT can be quite tricky. Some require strip harvesting while the latter uses one by one. We often don’t know which tools are used for extraction.

In addition, we’re not fully aware of many aspects. For example, which technique is better? Are prior incisions made to the scalp? Who carries out the transplantation? A doctor? A nurse? A certified practitioner?

The DHI Method

The DHI method stands out due to its disciplinary
standardization with respect to the extraction, categorization and implantation phase.

Why DHI?

Nurturing the Donor Zone: Although the donor zone is a pivotal part of DHI, yet it is limited. Therefore, the DHI method manages, nurtures and takes meticulous care of the donor zone especially for younger patients who witness an early receding hairline or balding. This step is a rule of thumb as it makes room for another hair transplantation session in the future.

No Scars, 100% Pain-free! Unlike FUT or FUE, where a scalpel is used to cut out a strip of skin, DHI uses a specifically designed patented instrument (1mm or less) to avoid scars or harm to your hair follicles.

Preservation of Hair Follicles: The DHI protocol requires each and every follicle to be preserved in a HypoThermosol solution at a specific temperature to enhance their development and preservation after placement.

Rigorous Medical Training: Right from the doctor to the nurses, this procedure requires a training of up to 18 months to master every rule, technique and methodology that abides by DHI’s global standards. Nurses are also trained for a maximum of 6 months.

One Doctor – No Substitution! DHI is carried out by a doctor certified by the DHI Academy. At no given point of time is the doctor substituted by an operating assistant or by a machine. The technique is performed by hand right from the first follicle extracted to the last follicle implanted.

Explore the steps of hair transplantation with the DHI Method

The DHI Method has two pivotal stages – extraction and implantation. The core element for this procedure is the “donor” zone. This is located on the back and on the sides of the skull. This is the only area spared from hair loss. In a nutshell, the hair follicles are carefully extracted from this area and re-implanted using a patented DHI instrument on the region suffering from hair loss where the follicle will continue to grow and produce hair.

At Maison Lutétia, we further enhance this process by preserving the hair follicles in a solution of HypoThermosol. This valuable preparation optimizes the rate of regrowth by minimizing trauma to the hair follicles during the procedure. This protocol is an absolute, must as per the indications specified by DHI.

The process of extraction can be compared to the work of a craftsman. With great delicacy and precision, each hair follicle is extracted using a specially designed and patented DHI tool that makes micro punches (approx. 0.7mm-1mm) on the donor zone. This technique guarantees a gentle, non-invasive, yet manual harvesting.

Unlike a machine, only a DHI certified specialized doctor can judge and anticipate the direction to extract each follicle. This craftsmanship enables the removal of each hair follicle in a pain-free way without damaging the roots.

Implantation is the second stage of DHI. This stage is the equally as precise and meticulous as the extraction stage, however, it requires a subtle, definite, non-invasive motion to obtain a perfect, customized result as per the patient’s requirement.

During this stage, the steps of implantation follow a rigorous and thorough protocol in which the certified doctor and nurse will work in synergy. First, the nurse sorts and classifies the hair follicles one-by-one according to the number of hairs they contain (from 1-9), the average being 2.2. Next, the doctor asks the nurse to bring the chosen follicles to recreate the hair as naturally as possible i.e. simple follicles at the level of the capillary line and multiple follicles along the head to provide a denser result.

Advantages of using the DHI Method

Patented Tools
The implanter instrument is a small stylus with a spring equipped with a grooved needle. As a result, this gives full control of direction, angle and depth.

No Scars
The tools used in DHI do not require pre-incisions or holes as in the case of conventional methods like FUE or FUT.

Certified Practitioner
From start to finish, DHI is performed by doctors that are trained and certified by the DHI Academy.

100% Natural Results
Tailor-made to suit every patient’s individual requirement, the DHI method’s objective is to deliver a perfectly studied graft distribution by restoring a natural capillary line thereby leaving you with a denser hairline with great texture.

How To Choose The Right Hair Transplantation Technique?

It's all about making the right choice. To summarise, hair implantation is a medical intervention that requires a precise and meticulous know-how, training and a developed practice to give you natural results that will complement you.
